Klaus Martens was a doctor in German army during WWII while on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing. He found that his standard - issue army boots were too comfortable on his injured foot so, he designed improvements to the boots with soft leather and air-paddad soles and he made himself with air-cushioned soles.

1st Dr.martens boot in UK came out on 1st April 1960 with an eight-eyelets, cherry-red, nappa leather design
